Exhibition Opening - Freedom and Constraint

Viewers enjoy Freedom and Constraint

On First Friday, August 7, 2015, Matrix Fine Art hosted a reception for our latest exhibition, Freedom and Constraint: Fused Glass by Lisa Chernoff & Paintings by Rachel Popowcer and Raul Dorn.

The dynamic mix of media really enlivened both the space and our visitors!

Lisa Chernoff’s fused glass pieces evoke a soothing tension between the bold use of color along with the cold density of the glass itself. She captures intricate subtleties within the layers of glass and which are reinforced by the shadows projected on the wall.

Lisa Chernoff's fused glass works are a feast for the eye! Painterly and ephemeral.

Rachel Popowcer carefully builds up her paintings with layers of color and personal symbols such as hummingbirds, lines, and the female form.

Raul Dorn’s pieces “have no prescribed footwork - only impulse, no finger on the map - just direction. His work has become increasingly less cerebral and calibrated, gaining contact with the turbulence of painting from the gut.”

Our artists each demonstrate levels of constraint and freedom in their approach to mark-making, subject matter and execution.

Did you miss the reception? Don't worry! The show runs through August 29, 2015. There's still time to see the work in person.

Raul Dorn’s paintings energize Matrix Fine Art

Matrix Fine Art is excited to introduce this outstanding Las Cruces artist to the Albuquerque area! Raul Dorn’s vibrant, yet slightly whimsical, abstract paintings often start with collaged sewing patterns. The resulting images sometime retain the arrows and track marks, but Dorn’s use of semi-organic shapes and bold lines transform them into pathways that lead to a deeper and more metaphysical realm.

Dorn’s February reception was well attended and we continue to receive rave reviews of his work.

Even Raul’s son Lowell gave us “thumbs up!” How cool is that!

One of Raul’s friends volunteered to play his guitar and it made this First Friday reception extra special.

Gallery assistant Tanya Landin takes care of last minute details just before the reception.

In the words of the artist:
“Less is becoming more in the recent oil on canvas work of the studio, as the gift of silence and void become more precious. Painting has become a journey, a diary, a place to fly, a place to give order to my meandering thoughts, a place to comprehend the source of truth that lies beyond, behind, and below all surfaces.”

Don’t miss this fabulous show! It runs until February 27.
